Tooth pain doesn’t always follow a 9-to-5 schedule. And when something feels “off,” it can be hard to know if it’s urgent or if it can wait until your next appointment. At The Philadelphia Dentist, we’re here for you 7 days a week, 365 days a year—because dental emergencies don’t take days off.

So, how do you know when to call us right away?

6 Signs You Might Need Emergency Dental Care

1. A Loose or Wiggly Tooth
Adult teeth should never move. Whether it’s from an injury or an underlying issue like infection, contact us immediately—your tooth might still be saved.

2. Knocked-Out Tooth
Time is critical. Keep the tooth moist (store it in your cheek or milk), and call our office right away. Fast action can mean the difference between saving or losing the tooth.

3. Severe or Persistent Toothache
A dull ache might wait, but sharp, lingering pain could signal an infection or abscess. If your tooth hurts for more than a day or two, don’t ignore it.

4. Swollen or Bleeding Gums (from trauma)
Bleeding after brushing? Likely not an emergency. But bleeding after an accident—or swelling with pain—needs immediate attention.

5. Swollen Jaw or Difficulty Swallowing
This could be a sign of a serious infection. If it’s paired with a fever or trouble swallowing, call us right away.

6. Dental Abscess
Painful, swollen, and sometimes accompanied by a bad taste or fever, an abscess is a dental emergency. It won’t heal on its own.
