As your trusted Philadelphia emergency dentists, we strive to save teeth whenever possible. In spite of our best efforts, there are a few scenarios where tooth extraction is the only way to protect your dental and overall health.
When these situations arise, we are committed to your comfort throughout the process. We will also discuss any available tooth replacement options with you, if your situation calls for it.
When Troubled Teeth Need to Go
Here are a few situations where tooth extraction may be advised:
A tooth broken at the gumline — In many cases, a broken tooth can be restored with a dental crown or other type of restoration. But enough tooth structure must remain. A tooth broken at or near the gumline may not qualify for a post and crown.
A tooth with a failed root canal — While rare, root canal treatment can sometimes fail. If retreatment is not an option, we may recommend an extraction.
Wisdom teeth — Not all wisdom teeth require extraction, but because of their location all the way at the back of the mouth, they are prone to becoming impacted (or stuck) in the jawbone, which can lead to pain. Wisdom teeth can also cause overcrowding and put pressure on your other teeth. We will let you know if you could benefit from tooth extraction.
Bone loss — Periodontal infection can lead to bone loss. When the supporting bone structure of a tooth fails, removing it may be your only option.
What Is the Best Way to Replace a Missing Tooth?
Proper tooth replacement depends on the location of the tooth, your oral health, and your preferences. Wisdom teeth do not need to be replaced.
Several popular ways to replace a missing tooth include:
- Dental implant — Considered the gold standard of tooth replacement, dental implants replace the entire tooth structure from crown to root, giving you the most lifelike solution. Dental implants are also long-lasting with the proper care.
- Dental bridge — A dental bridge replaces a missing tooth without surgical intervention and is a great option for patients who want to avoid surgery.
- Dentures and partials — If you have multiple missing teeth, you may consider a partial denture or denture to replace your missing teeth.
