If you have a toothache, swelling, or if you break a tooth, you don’t want to wait for dental treatment. Relying on ice packs and pain relievers is a mistake. These methods do not stop infection or reverse your dental health issue. They only cover the problem and allow it to fester.

At The Philadelphia Dentist, you don’t have to wait days to see a dentist! We treat all sorts of dental emergencies—and we do so as soon as possible. Emergencies we treat include:

  • Deep cavities and toothaches
  • Lost dental crowns and fillings
  • Broken dentures or restoration
  • Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
  • Swollen, inflamed, or bleeding gums
  • Infected or abscessed teeth
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Toothache
  • Jaw swelling and pain

Have a dental issue and don’t see it listed here? Call us at (215) 342-7718. We don’t want you to worry about whether you have an emergency—if it concerns you, it affects us! Our team can make the best recommendation for you—considering your comfort and dental health.

Every individual there is a friendly professional; eager and ready to help you out

Over Thanksgiving weekend, I experienced an unpleasant mix of dental pain and fever-like symptoms that led to swelling and tightness in my jaw. Dr. Lee Schriftman and his team got me in for an appointment immediately and diagnosed my problem: infected wisdom teeth and a premolar.

I was prescribed antibiotics and a corticosteroid to help eliminate the infection and heal my jaw before my surgery, which was performed by Dr. Ryan Eckley. I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed and a problematic premolar. I felt no pain or discomfort during the surgery. I had no issues during my recovery period thanks to the directions I was given. Overall, the whole experience felt more like a dream and certainly not a nightmare.

The Philadelphia Dentist is very accessible, even on weekends. Although I lacked dental insurance, they were able to set me up with a solid payment plan that allowed me to spend significantly less out of pocket. Every individual there is a friendly professional; eager and ready to help you out.

I would highly recommend the team at The Philadelphia Dentist, especially if you have a dental emergency like I did!

What is your approach to emergency dentistry in the Northeast Philadelphia area?

Part of being an emergency dentist in Northeast Philadelphia is having the skills and experience to handle whatever dental problems our patients are facing.

In addition to over 30 years of experience as a general dentist, Dr. Schriftman served in the US Air Force as a dentist in both Virginia and Texas. In this time, he gained valuable experience working in all areas of dentistry and treating patients with a wide range of oral health needs.

For this reason, we offer same-day pain relief and all the emergency dental services your family needs.

  • Replace a lost crown or filling
  • Provide root canal treatment
  • Treat gum disease
  • Repair broken dentures
  • ?Extract teeth, including impacted wisdom teeth

Another benefit of calling your Delaware Valley emergency dentist is that we can get you out of pain and start treatment the same day. Many dental offices that see emergency patients can relieve your pain but will usually reschedule you for treatment.

At The Philadelphia Dentist, we allow plenty of time for your emergency appointment. For this reason, we can relieve your pain and address the underlying problem during the same visit.

We also make sure you feel comfortable when under our care. This includes numbing agents and reassurance. We want you to know that you’re in safe and gentle hands when you visit our dental office.

What is root canal treatment?

In some cases, if you have a toothache, you may have a root infection that requires root canal therapy. A root infection means the root and pulp of your tooth have developed an infection. This can be due to severe decay or trauma (past or present).

Sometimes your dentist finds your root infection during a routine dental exam—early root infection that is not causing you pain or a root infection that has destroyed the nerve, thereby preventing pain.

In either case, infections are dangerous because they can risk your tooth or spread to other locations.

When root infection symptoms are present, you may notice:

  • Toothache that can be severe
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Painful or swollen gum
  • Bump or blister on the gum

If you need a root canal treatment in Philadelphia, the first step is numbing. Your dentist does not want you to feel a thing! After the area is thoroughly numb, we gently extract the root and pulp of your tooth and seal it with a temporary filling.

Most patients report immediate pain relief—from the numbing agent step onward!

After the tooth heals, you come back in for a permanent filling or a tooth crown. A tooth crown looks like your teeth, and it covers your treated tooth to the gumline, providing support when chewing.

Will I need a tooth extraction?

In some cases, patients opt for a tooth extraction over treatment. In other cases, the tooth is severely damaged and cannot be saved.

If you need a tooth pulled in Philadelphia, count on a gentle and conservative approach. Of course, your emergency dentist numbs the area, but we also want you to feel confident that you are in good hands.

Following your tooth extraction and healing, you can talk to your dentist about tooth replacement options like dentures, partial dentures, dental bridges, and dental implants.

Restoring your smile is essential to your emotional well-being and the health of your bite and digestion.

How can I prevent future dental emergencies?

You have just come from the dentist. Your toothache and swelling are behind you. You want to make sure that it doesn’t happen again.

Of course, there are no guarantees—accidents happen. But you can take measures to lower your risks for future cavities and dental emergencies.

First, you should visit your dentist twice yearly for dental exams and teeth cleanings. These preventive measures go a long way toward lowering your risks for dental health complications.

Next, you should brush and floss at least twice each day to eliminate bacteria and help stop the formation of plaque and tartar.

Other tips include:

  • Always wear face gear or a mouthguard if you’re competing in sports.
  • Always wear your nightguard if you’ve been diagnosed with bruxism—grinding and clenching your teeth.
  • Never use your teeth to twist off a lid, carry a heavy package, or similar.

At The Philadelphia Dentist, our goal is keeping your teeth healthy for life, but we believe this is always a partnership between patient and dentist.

We are always here to help you make the most of our oral care routine as well.

Contact Our Northeast Philadelphia Dental Clinic

Your first step when you have a dental emergency is to call The Philadelphia Dentist at (215) 342-7718. Our experienced team of caring professionals will listen to your concerns and schedule your appointment for the same day. When you get here, we’ll do whatever it takes to provide the relief you need and get your oral health back on track.

As experienced emergency dentists in Northeast Philadelphia, Dr. Schriftman and Dr. Ambriz routinely perform wisdom teeth extractions and root canal therapy. In fact, we are able to treat any dental emergency you face and provide the urgent pain relief you need. Because we want you to be comfortable, we offer nitrous oxide or laughing gas with no additional charge.

Comfortable Wisdom Teeth Removal

In the case of wisdom teeth or third molars, if they’re causing problems, it’s best to remove them. Our ancient ancestors needed the chewing power of a third set of molars, but we don’t. And since they’re so far back in your mouth, wisdom teeth are difficult to clean. This puts you at risk for gum disease and cavities, so our dentists usually recommend removing wisdom teeth.

Root Canal Treatment in Philadelphia

As for root canals, The Philadelphia Dentist knows that the pain of an infected or abscessed tooth can be so excruciating that you can’t function. We’ll make it a priority to relieve your pain first. Once we numb your tooth with a local anesthetic, you’ll experience immediate relief. Dr. Schriftman and Dr. Ambriz will perform a root canal to clear away the infection, which is what’s causing the pain in the first place.
